Publications: OPHTHALMOLOGY MANAGEMENT/OCULAR SURGERY NEWS

Continuing with my published articles and columns, I began writing a monthly Technology Update column for the original Ophthalmology Management in October 1989. That column continued until the magazine folded following the April 1991 edition. (The magazine was resurrected in January 1998 as the new Ophthalmology Management by Boucher Communications Inc., now called Lippincott Williams & Wilkins VisionCare Group.)

Later in 1991, I was asked to write my monthly Technology Update column for Ocular Surgery News. That column began in December 1991 and continued until I stopped writing it in 2003. Some of the columns prepared in 1999 through 2002 can be found online at the OSN Supersite web site, by searching my name, but most of the others cannot. I have computer files for all, and “hard copies” of most, if for whatever reason someone would like to read past history.

Here is a listing of both the Ophthalmology Management and Ocular Surgery News columns:

Publications: VISION MONDAY

Other than occasional articles for magazines, newsletters, and for Decision Resources, my first job as a columnist was for Vision Monday, part of the Jobson Group of publications. I wrote mostly about what was happening in the contact lens industry, beginning when the newspaper first began publishing in late 1988. These columns continued until November 1990, by which time I had begun writing my Technology Update column for Ophthalmology Management (and later for Ocular Surgery News).

I have been able to find most of the columns that were written, but a few remain on an old computer and are probably inaccessible. Here is a listing of what I have been able to find:

1988

● SEPTEMBER'S FDA APPROVALS, November 1988
● WHAT'S NEW ON THE INTERNATIONAL FRONT, December, 1988

1989

● A LOOK BACK AT THE NEW PRODUCTS OF 1988, January 1989

A BIT OF NOSTALGIA (my history in soft lenses), March 1989

● MEDIA FOCUSES ON CONTACT LENSES, June 1989
● FUTURE PROSPECTS FOR ALLERGAN, July 1989
● A SALUTE TO THE B&L NATIONAL RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM, August 1989
● PATENTS, LICENSES AND LITIGATION. September, 1989

● ANOTHER TEMPEST IN A TEA POT?, December 1989

1990

● CONTACT LENS FUTURES, February 1990
● REBIRTH OF A BIFOCAL, March 1990
● ON A CLEAR DAY..., April 1990
● GLOBALIZATION, May 1990

● EYECARE IN THE SOVIET UNION, August 1990

● WHO’S WATCHING THE STORE, October 1990
● LASER TURF WAR -- PART II, November 1990

Publications: DECISION RESOURCES

One of the original purposes of starting this web Journal was to post some of my earliest published work. However, since I doubt that the earliest papers and reports appear anywhere on the web, I have decided just to post a list of these publications by publishing source, in this first case, Arthur D. Little’s Decision Resources. (Decision Resources, originally a part of Arthur D. Little, is now a self-standing company and can be reached via this link.)

Some of more important papers and reports fell into a few subject areas. Here is a list by subject and date:

SOFT CONTACT LENSES

● Outlook for Soft Contact Lenses, September 1973
● Outlook for Soft Contact Lenses, September 1975
● Update on the Market for Soft Contact Lenses in the United States, October 1977

The above reports were probably the first marketing reports covering the beginnings of the Soft Contact Lens Industry. They were published by ADL Decision Resources and established me as an “expert” (also known as a “guru” or “maven”) in the field, and led to more than 100 consulting assignments in the soft lens industry. Among the more notable consulting assignments were my assistance in Johnson & Johnson’s acquisition of Frontier Contact Lenses (later renamed Vistakon); Ciba-Geigy’s acquisition of Titmus Eurocon (Germany) leading to the formation of Ciba Vision; and Schering Corporation’s acquisition of Wesley-Jessen (later acquired by Ciba Vision). I also was part of the legal team in the landmark Bausch & Lomb vs. the IRS case concerning the disposition of off-shore royalties under the tax code.

In later years I wrote about cosmetic tinted soft lenses and disposable contact lenses for DR (see the following sections).

MEDICAL LASERS

● Outlook for Lasers in Ophthalmology, ADL International Health Care Industry Service, December 1983
● Ophthalmic Lasers, ADL Futurescope, January 1984
The Outlook for Medical Lasers, ADL Decision Resources, August 1985
Medical Laser Systems: The Surgical Revolution, ADL Decision Resources, December 1986
● Medical Laser Systems,ADL Futurescope, January 1987
● Medical Laser Systems - Market Outlook and Company Participants, ADL Spectrum Health Care Portfolio, February 1987
● Medical Laser Systems Applications, ADL Spectrum Health Care Portfolio, April 1987

The 1983 ophthalmic laser paper was my first entry into the field of medical lasers. It followed closely the first FDA approval of lasers for use in ophthalmology.

The 1985 “The Outlook for Medical Lasers” report was my first major report on medical lasers and was widely sold by Decision Resources. It was followed a year later by the 1986 “Medical Laser Systems: The Surgical Revolution” report, also widely distributed by DR.

REFRACTIVE SURGERY

● Developments in Keratorefractive Surgery, ADL International Health Care Portfolio, January 1984
● Laser Refractive Keratoplasty, ADL Spectrum Health Care Portfolio, May 1987
● Update: Laser Refractive Keratoplasty, ADL Spectrum Health Care Portfolio, July 1987
Laser Refractive Keratoplasty: Evolution and Prospects, ADL Spectrum Health Care Portfolio, February 1990; ADL Futurescope, May 1990

I first began writing about refractive surgery in 1984, first about radial keratotomy (RK), but a few years later, about the laser refractive surgery revolution, ending up with a “White Paper” on the subject in 1990.

I have “hard” copies of most of the above papers/report if anyone is really interested in looking at past history. The remainder, unfortunately, have been relegated to “the round file”, unless they remain in the archives of Decision Resources.

In the seventeen years that I wrote for Decision Resources, I covered many other ophthalmic technologies and subjects including: ophthalmic industry sales; intraocular lenses; and viscoelastic substances. Following is a complete listing of the papers and reports published by DR:

● Outlook for Soft Contact Lenses, September 1973
● Outlook for Soft Contact Lenses, September 1975
● Update on the Market for Soft Contact Lenses in the United States, October 1977
● Review of Intraocular Lenses (IOLs), ADL International Health Care Portfolio, July 1982
● Worldwide Ophthalmic Industry Sales, ADL International Health Care Portfolio, October 1982
● A Look at Vision Correction in the Future, ADL International Health Care Portfolio, November 1982
● Worldwide Ophthalmic Industry Sales - Update, ADL International Health Care Portfolio, June 1983
● Update - Intraocular Lenses (IOLs), ADL International Health Care Portfolio, September 1983
● Cosmetic Tinted Contact Lenses, ADL International Health Care Portfolio, November 1983
● Outlook for Lasers in Ophthalmology, ADL International Health Care Industry Service, December 1983
● Ophthalmic Lasers, ADL Futurescope, January 1984
● Developments in Keratorefractive Surgery, ADL International Health Care Portfolio, January 1984
● The Outlook for Viscoelastic Substances, ADL International Health Care Portfolio, June 1984
● Viscoelastic Substances, ADL Futurescope, July 1984
